Last month I was reading an article in the Evening Standard about LA style fitness trends which are coming over to the UK. One trend in particular which caught my attention was something called “Aerial Fitness” at Sky Lab Studios in Camden. Intrigued by the class I got in contact with the studio and before I knew it I was booked to give Aerial Fitness a go!
Aerial Fitness is a conditioning class involving press-ups, pull-ups and tucks but there’s a twist- it all happens whilst being suspended in the air. Think circus training for fitness fanatics.
If you like testing your physical abilities then this class if perfect for you. Suspension training is not for the faint hearted! The class is a relentless hour of strength, co-ordination and laughs. In just 15 minutes I found myself pouring with sweat. You also have to learn to trust yourself, especially when you’re hanging upside down in a hammock with your head less than a metre away from the ground.
The main muscle groups you work in an aerial class are your upper body and abdominal muscles. In fact this type of exercise hits your core so furiously I ached for about 2 days afterwards! You spend a lot of the time lifting yourself up into the air and using your core muscles to keep you there. HIIT training is tough enough but when you’re fighting against gravity hanging upside down you have to work even harder.
Aerial fitness is a really fun way to keep fit. You don’t need any gymnastic experience or even have that much upper body strength to do it. After only a few classes you’ll see a massive difference in your upper body strength, core strength and you’ll learn a lot about your body. Especially about the things you never knew it could do. If you fancy doing something new, grab a friend and try it for yourself. You’d be amazed how addictive it is.
Thank you Sky Lab Studios for having me and letting me attend one of your awesome classes.
